Creative Clay Creatures: Fish!

Mondays from 4:30 - 5:45 pm
April 6, 13, 20, 27, 2025
In this fun, hands-on clay class, artists will learn how to hand-build their own unique clay fish using simple sculpting techniques like pinching, forming, and shaping. Students will add textures and patterns for scales and fins, then finish their sculpture by adding metal pieces for the eyes, giving their fish extra personality and sparkle. Along the way, we’ll talk about ocean creatures and creativity as each child designs a colorful, one-of-a-kind fish sculpture to be fired and taken home. Children are encouraged to bring their imagination and get ready for some fin-tastic clay fun!
Please note the photo is of hand-built fish but not in the style we will make in this class. Our finished pieces will be three-dimensional. Due to the nature of clay drying and firing time, finished artwork will be ready for pickup approximately three weeks after the class. 5/14/26 of after

In this colorful mixed-media class, young artists ages 6–14 will create a butterfly garden scene on canvas using several fun art techniques. Students will begin by painting a bright acrylic flower garden background, exploring color, brushstrokes, and imaginative floral designs. Next, they will sculpt a small clay butterfly body to add dimension to their artwork, and finish by painting the butterfly wings with vibrant watercolor patterns. Learning to Think Like an Artist
ages 6-10
Learning to Think Like an Artist 10-week class, students will create a minimum of one two-dimensional project, such as a drawing or painting, and one three-dimensional project, such as a sculpture or ceramic piece. Throughout the course, students will explore ideas about creativity, planning, and experimentation, while developing confidence in their artistic choices. We will also discuss the community that supports and inspires our art-making experiences, helping students understand how artists learn, grow, and share their work with others.
Mastering Media
ages 10-16
Mastering Media is a two-hour class designed for older students who are ready to spend more time exploring art materials and techniques. The extended class time allows students to slow down, dive deeper into projects, and have greater opportunities to play, experiment, and discover new ways of working with different media. This format encourages creative risk-taking, thoughtful problem solving, and the development of stronger artistic skills while giving students the freedom to fully engage in the art-making process.

CommUNITY Arts Exposure
Spring 2026’s Learning to Think Like an Artist and Mastering Media CommUNITY Arts Exposure is scheduled for Monday, April 13, 2026 from 9:00–11:00 AM. This special event will take place in partnership with Jen Kuntz of Lebanon Valley College and is designed to provide educational programming that is mutually beneficial for both groups of students.
During this experience, LVC students who are education majors will visit the studio, and SPLAT students enrolled in these 10-week classes will advocate for their visual arts education by teaching the college students art-making lessons. It is always a challenging and rewarding experience and one that SPLAT students often remember and talk about for years to come!
Parents whose children are enrolled in SPLAT’s Spring 2026 Learning to Think Like an Artist and Mastering Media classes will need to file an educational release form with their child’s school for an approved educational absence that morning. Additional details will be shared with families who are registered for the classes.
